Description

The English B1 Badge certifies the achievement of a level equivalent to B1 for the English language, according to the European system defining standards of linguistic competence, the CEFR (Common European Framework of Referencefor languages). The tests of level B1 in English language are provided by the University of Palermo Language Centre (CLA) and assess listening and writing skills. Badge Criteria

The holder of this Badge: belongs to one of these categories: undergraduate or postgraduate students, students taking part in mobility programmes, PhD students, Master’s Students, teaching staff, technical and administrative staff and financed researchers at the University of Palermo; has passed the B1 English language test of the University of Palermo Language Centre (CLA). Therefore, this Badge recognises the achievement of level equivalent to B1 in the English language, with reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR).

Skills

The holder of this Badge has attained level B1 in English Language, reflecting the specifications of the Threshold Level for a visitor to a foreign country. Therefore he/she possesses the ability to maintain interaction and to succeed in obtaining what he/she wishes in situations of a various nature, for example: generally follows and understands the main points of extended discussion around him/her; in informal discussions between friends, expresses and asks for points of view and personal opinions; can make clear the main point he/she wants to pass on; uses numerous simple linguistic forms flexibly, almost always succeeding in expressing his/her own idea; continues a discussion in a comprehensible manner, even though pausing for grammatical and lexical palnning and repair is very evident, especially in longer stretches of free production; and the ability to cope flexibly with problems in everyday life, for example: can deal with less usual situations on public transport; can deal with the majority of situations that may arise in an agency when arranging travel or during the trip itself; takes part without preparation in a conversation on issues with which he/she is familiar with; makes a complaint; takes some initiatives in an interview consultation (e. g. Introduces a new topic), while largely depending on the interlocutor in the interaction; asks someone to clarify or explain what they have just said. In particular, the holder of this Badge possesses the skills in Listening and Writing validated by the B1 English Language test. Listening: can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situation likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Writing: Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
