Issued since 21 December 2017.
Description
The holder of this Badge has obtained the MSc in Biologia - Biology at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Lectures are in Italian or in English upon request. The MSc in Biologia - Biology offers advanced training in deep knowledge of biological disciplines and their more recent developments; theoretical and practical knowledge related to the most recent lab techniques; familiarity with statistic tolls and data presentation and the application of bioinformatics in the biology field; familiarity with databases and information management; ability to critically read international scientific literature; protocol planning and technical issues solving in the research activity. The program consists of courses in Quantitative Biology, Biostatistics, Cytogenetics, Embryology, Chemotherapeutics pharmacology, Neurosciences, Cardiovascular Physiology, Plant Molecular Physiology, Applied Immunology, Molecular and cellular oncology, Metabolism pathology, Biocenosis analysis and management, Biodiversity and Bioprospecting, Biogeography, Animal Genome Evolution, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology of Eukaryotes, Developmental Genetics, Molecular human genetics, Biochemistry Techniques, Molecular Microbiology, Cell homeostasis in somatic tissues and staminal cells, Gene regulation and human pathology, Biology of animal interactions. Internships and time spent abroad are possible and are part of the program. The elaboration of the final dissertation includes an internship period of 8-10 months in a research lab of the University or another Institute of Higher Education, or in an Italian or foreign research organisation. The normal duration of the course is 2 years.
Badge Criteria
The holder of this Badge has obtained the MSc in Biologia - Biology (120 ECTS) at the University of Milano-Bicocca. The Program Structure is available at this link. In order to obtain this degree, a student must enrol and complete the corresponding study program at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Once students complete the activities, ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are awarded. The ECTS is a credit system for higher education that allows comparison of study attainments of students across the European Union (in Italy, 1 ECTS credit = 25 work or study hours). ECTS credits are awarded to students when they successfully complete learning activities, usually as follows: 1. regarding the taught courses, students must pass a final exam (written, oral, or both written and oral), achieving a mark equal to or higher than 18/30; 2. regarding internships and practical exercises, students must attend the majority of the course compulsorily (in general 70% of the total time) and must obtain a "pass" grade from the teacher (or from the tutor, or the supervisor); 3. regarding workshops and fieldwork, students must: in certain cases, pass a final exam (written, oral, or both written and oral), achieving a mark equal to or higher than 18/30, or, in other cases, attend the majority of the module/course compulsorily (in general 70% of the total time) and obtain a "pass" grade from the teacher (or from the tutor, or the supervisor); 4. students must prepare and discuss in open debate a dissertation on a chosen topic, based either on a laboratory research project in the light of a study of the relevant scientific literature. The final degree grade depends on: 1. the weighted average of all grades obtained for all the learning activities, weighed by their ECTS credits; 2. the quality of the final dissertation.
Skills
The MSc in Biologia - Biology provides graduates with a solid cultural background with regard to the biological systems: cells, genomes, organisms and ecosystems. Graduates in Biologia - Biology : are capable of dealing with issues related to: a deep knowledge of the biological systems, including the skills for problem solving and proactive solution finding; will develop careers as researchers involved in basic research activities (mainly in the academic world), and R&D activities (mainly in industries); have professional opportunities in production analysis and control in the bio-sanitary, pharmaceutical, biotech, zoo technical, agro food and fisheries sectors; labs of analysis, certification and biological control, environmental monitoring and national health care system; professional services related to environmental impact and environment preservation; in all those public and private entities where a classification and management of living organisms take place; have the fundamentals for undertaking PhD studies.
