Description

The holder of this Badge obtained the MSc in Marine Sciences at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Marine Sciences is a Master's Degree offered by the University of Milano-Bicocca jointly with the Maldives National University. Lessons are taught in English by international faculty. After completion of the first common teaching subjects, students can choose among three different paths: Environment, Bio-ecology and Human Geography. The normal duration of the course is 2 years.

Badge Criteria

The holder of this Badge obtained the MSc in Marine Sciences (120 ECTS) at the University of Milano-Bicocca. The Program Structure is available at this link. In order to obtain this degree, a student must enrol in and complete the corresponding study program at the University of Milano-Bicocca. When students complete the activities, ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits will be awarded. The ECTS is a credit system for higher education that allows comparison of study attainments of students across the European Union (in Italy, 1 ECTS credit= 25 work or study hours). In our University ECTS credits are awarded to students when they successfully complete learning activities, usually as follows: 1. regarding the taught courses, students must pass a final exam (written, oral, or both written and oral), achieving a mark equal to or better than 18/30; 2. regarding the professional training periods and practice, students must attend the majority of the course as compulsory (in general 70% of the total time) and must obtain a "pass" grade from the teacher (or from the tutor, or the supervisor); 3. regarding the workshops and fieldwork, students must: in certain cases, pass a final exam (written, oral, or both written and oral), achieving a mark equal to or better than 18/30, or, in other cases, attend the majority of the module/course as compulsory (in general 70% of the total time) and obtain a "pass" grade from the teacher (or from the tutor, or the supervisor); 4. students must prepare and discuss in open debate a dissertation on a chosen topic, based either on a laboratory research project or on a study of the relevant scientific literature. The final degree grade depends on: the weighted grade point average of all grades obtained for all the learning activities, weighted by their ECTS credits; quality of the final dissertation.

The MSc in Marine Sciences provides graduates with a solid cultural background with regard to the marine environment, life in the oceans, marine human geography. Graduates in MSc in Marine Sciences: are capable of dealing with issues related to: monitoring, control and management of the marine environment and the surrounding land, the structure and functions of ecological systems, the analyses of human activities and their specific social organizations in coastal and island environments; will develop careers as researchers, educators, environmental managers, consultants, ecologists, science communicators, field marine ecologists, marine human geographers; will be able to apply for positions in public services, the private sector or local, national, international or transnational organisations; have the fundamentals for undertaking PhD studies.
